Like others have said, the entire point of the research year is to network, build a connection with a PI who will go to bat for you during applications, and get strong LORs / strengthen your CV. There is nearly no value to a self guided research year.My current city gets water from Lake Michigan which is heavily chlorinated but that’s all I know. I have a shower head that softens water but it didn’t seem to make a difference for my scalp. If I wash with regular shampoo the flaking intensifies a lot and quickly. I think having 2-3 dermatology research experiences with 2-3 citations out of each of those would be more than sufficient to get you competitive for dermatology as an applicant without a research year.
