To calculate the portfolio return, we look at the return of each sub-period (e.g. each year): In 2012, the portfolio grew from $5,000 to $7,937.50, before the $1,000 contribution. Boggleheads. Most of my current portfolio is VTSAX & VTIAX. Both QQQ and VGT have had similar returns. They both have a lot of similar holdings, but VGT has more holdings, lower expense ratio, and pays better dividends.
