Best companions for story in pathfinder kingmaker

I'm finding it hard to enjoy WotR story due to not really liking the mythic path stuff, that and the alignment choices being binary only makes an easy win for Kingmaker when it comes to the story and choices imo. For gameplay, i'm not really a fan of either since it mostly comes down to combat and Pathfinder's combat is boring for me.
